March: the month between winters end and spring cleaning. For those of us tired of watching the snow melt, we thankfully can savor a bit of Irish luck and bracket upsets to pass the time during this month of madness.
And what better madness can there be than Puppy Madness!
Your friends at the Keating Agency are excited to announce the addition of a new family and office member in mid-April. Like it often is in sports, it is a player to be named later – with your help, of course.
Let me explain.
A little bit of back story
2019 marks the 50th year of business for the Michael J. Keating Agency. We are grateful to have been your neighbor and part of the local community for three generations of our family business.
In honor of my late Grandfather Michael J. Keating, I want to tell a quick story that not many of you know.
While we possibly could be celebrating the 50th year of “Keating Pet Grooming,” I doubt it would have perpetuated into a third generation.
You see, after moving to Connecticut from New Jersey, my grandfather fell in love with the local community. He knew he wanted to own a business in the heart of West Hartford.
Being the owner of multiple dogs, the idea to open a pet grooming salon almost became a reality. That is until a friend told him – “You are a great people person and salesman. You are in the insurance capital of the world. If you can sell 10 policies, I will help you open your own business.”
As they say, the rest is history. Ten life insurance policies later, my grandfather was learning the insurance industry and the Keating Agency was born.
Growing up, we had a lab retriever named Poco who my parents got as a gift when in the Pocono Mountains. (Poco from the Poconos – ha, ha) This much beloved pet passed away when my brother, sister, and I were in elementary school.
After years of rabbits, birds, turtles, fish, (maybe a hamster) and plenty of “When are we getting a dog again?” I was told if you get straight As, we will get a dog.
Well, the last quarter of 8th grade I did just that. Halloween of freshman year we brought Maximus, aka Max (for maximum honors, of course), into the family.
Sadly, shortly before I returned to Connecticut, Max passed away and his void was inescapable. My parents “down-sized” to a cat, but it just wasn’t the same. Cats are . . OK, but a dog embodies unconditional love.
Anyone who knows me is well aware there has been no shortage of “I am getting a dog” talks over the last two years.
Well, it has finally come to pass. The Keating Agency will be getting a new puppy and we are asking you to help us name the newest member of the family. To that end, we devised this contest to make you a part of it all. Just as you have been a part of everything we do for the past 50 years, we want you to help us name our new family member.
We are taking name suggestions and putting them into a bracket. The bracket will track your votes for the name of our new puppy.
Adding a Charitable Component
One of the most rewarding things about being an independent insurance agency, as well as a small business, is the ability to give back to local charities and organizations.
Connecticut is blessed with several amazing nonprofit organizations, which makes it difficult to choose which ones to support. Of course, we’d love to support them all.
In addition to helping us name our new puppy, we’re asking you to help us choose which local animal charities to donate money. As part of the naming contest, we also will donate to selected animal charities. The organizations preselected are in the Greater Hartford area and we welcome suggestions for others that are dear to you.
My grandfather’s favorite number was three. In honor of that, the Keating Agency will donate:
- $0.33 to each of three charities you choose for entering your name nomination
- $3.33 to each of three charities you choose with an Auto and/or Home Review or Business Owner policy review
Charites we are supporting: Animal Friends of CT, Connecticut Cat Connection, CT Humane Society, Dog Star Rescue, Fidelco, Kenways Cause, Protectors of Animals, Running for Rescues, Simon Foundation, US Horse Welfare and Rescue, West Hartford Dog Park Coalition.
