Crime PreventionOctober is a busy month.  Last week we told you about cyber security.  Most people are familiar with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Did you know October also is National Crime Prevention Month?

This blog will share information we found about ways you can make your home and neighborhood safer.

Crime Prevention Starts with You

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently announced that for the second consecutive year in a row, violent crime is on the decline.  For the 16th consecutive year, property crimes also declined.

However, as we told you last month, car burglaries in Connecticut remain a source of concern.  The National Crime Prevention Council also tells us that robbers are equal opportunity criminals.  The council’s pamphlet offers tips for staying safe at home and away.  Some tips include:

  • Ensuring family or friends know where you are going when you are out
  • Parking and staying in well-lit areas and in groups if possible
  • When wearing headphones, make certain you can still hear your surroundings
  • Know the neighborhoods where you live and work
  • Change the locks when you buy a new home
  • Be aware of people sitting in parked cars
  • Don’t let others know if you live alone
  • Keep outdoor lights on at night

Crime PreventionAnother crime prevention step you may want to take is to start or join a neighborhood watch.  The National Neighborhood Watch (NNW) organization provides information to help you start a neighborhood watch program in your community and work with local law enforcement.

In addition to recruiting neighbors to participate in the watch, the NNW recommends developing an action plan.  It offers resources for developing your plan, as well as creating a communication plan.  Both are integral to the success of your neighborhood watch program.

In addition to creating a safer neighborhood, forming a neighborhood watch could have a beneficial impact on your Homeowners Insurance.

The Keating Agency offers you information you can use to make yourself and your loved ones safer.  Nothing is more important to us than the well-being of our clients and neighbors.  We believe this is one of the reasons we have been so successful for 50 years.
